Wanna start your own studio?

Your choices: Bedroom, Electronic and House (with vocals), budget $4000 - $5999
Electronic and House project studios can be built with little money if you don't have to record vocals; but you need vocals so the budget you have is probably not enough. You should keep in mind that the sound quality of your demos could be relatively unprofessional. In this case, you will be required to re-mix and re-record the vocals in a better studio. My advice is to work mostly on the computer; buy used gear, when possible and worthy. Here's what I suggest:
  • PC* w/Cubase Sequencer and Software**
$750 used

*Pentium II or III, at least 128MB, 7200rpm Hard Disk.

**CoolEditPro, SoundForge, Rebirth, Recycle...

  • Echo Layla Sound Card
  • Akai S1000 Sampler
  • Korg M1Keyboard
  • Korg TR (Trinity Rack) Sound Module
  • EMU Orbit Sinth Module
  • AKG C3000 Microphone
  • Yamaha 01V Digital Mixer
  • Lexicon MPX100 Effects Processor
  • Behringer Composer Compressor
  • Tascam DA20 DAT recorder
$500 used
$500 used
$400 used
$700 used
$300 used
$150 used

$800

An alternative to DAT is CD recording but: 1) DAT is the standard in the music industry; 2) cheap CD recorders generally require expensive consumer CDs. A professional CD recorder, Tascam CDRW5000, can be found around $600 used, $850 new.

  • Any Crown(at least Samson) power amp
  • Yamaha NS10 Speakers
$300 used
$250 used; $400 new

NOTE: Sinth and Sound Modules are suggested according to dance music standards. In this particular section, choices are unlimited and personal.

You can find used and new gear at these prices in most classified ads papers and pre-owned and new equipment stores. Click here for a list.
